Hi, I’m mark olsen

I am an award winning teacher with a life long dedication to helping actors and performers of all levels to master the personal discoveries and practical skills that can propel them forward into being first rate artists. In addition to my movement teaching at the Juilliard School, I have taught graduate acting and scene study at Columbia University, masks and movement at Sarah Lawrence College, movement and movie musicals at New York Film Academy, devised work at Ryerson Theatre School in Toronto, and was formerly the Head of MFA Acting at Penn State University.

I teach people of all ages and cultures and am uniquely skilled at helping you to find and liberate your truest, most authentic artistic self. Using humor and thoughtful guidance, I will work diligently to invigorate your creative process and bring you closer to fulfilling your greatest artistic potential.

My Approach

When asked what technique I teach, I say: “The Olsen technique.” While that may be essentially the truth, there is much more to it than that. The fact is my teaching method, an approach that quickly becomes tailored to the individual student, is a multifaceted fusion of my many years studying with world class teachers and my professional work with legendary directors and actors. I draw from an extraordinary tapestry of master theatre artists, martial artists, stage combat professionals, physical comedy experts, and world class teachers of acting and movement. All of these influences have become a part of me and they all inspire me to provide you with my most fervent and devoted guidance. Their names, in random order are: Carolyn Boone, Rachel Maddox, Jacques LeCoq, Paul Baker, Robert Britton, Pilar Garcia, Samuel Avital, Andres Bossard, Leonard Pitt, Ivaldo Bertozzi, Madame Felicitas, Don Ahn, Jeff Bolt, Jose Quintero, Daniel Stein, Anne and Troupe Matthews, Moshe Feldenkrais, Elise Lynch, Cheryl (Gates) McFadden, Stephan Niedzialkawski, Moni and Mina Yakim, Richard Armstrong, Jonathan Hart, Michael Moriarty, David Bouchey, David Leong, Allen Suddeth, William Chen, and others.

It is also true that my students, many of whom I am still in touch with years later, have contributed enormously to my methodology. They continue to uplift and inspire me to always be curious, awake, and in touch with my artistic soul.
